Draining Carb Float Bowls

This job doesn't get much easier; so quick and easy, you  should do it while you're waiting for the oil to drain at each change.

According to the Big K manual page 2-9 :

  • Connect a hose to the bottom of the carb drain (left arrow on picture at right)
  • Run the end into a suitable container
  • Turn fuel tap to the PRI [prime] position
  • Turn out drain plug (right arrow) a few turns and drain float bowl - watch for any crap that may come out.
  • [Note that fuel will continue to flow, flushing out the bowl as long at the petcock is on prime or the drain screw is open]
  • Tighten the drain plug
  • Go on to the next carb
A couple of tips :
  • The drain plug requires a 3mm allen wrench. Well, the outside carbs are easy with a regular allen wrench but the inside carbs are another story. So get yourself a ball wrench. Bondhus seems to be a common maker of these little guys. They say that the angle of attack can be up to 25 degrees. The illustration at right shows why the ball type allen wrench works best. They're available in the basic L-shape, T-handle, or screw driver handle.

A really nice T-handle ball driver is available from COG's very own Murph. Nice quality, and inexpensive.
